Toco toucan – Ramphastos toco
The Toco Toucan is the most known member of the family of Toucans.
It lives in South America in the rainforest, in Brazil in savannas and in Guyana where it is a symbol.
Toco Toucans have a remarkable plumage with a black body, white neck and blue circles around the eyes. But what strikes most is their immense yellow beak with a black spot. This mouthpiece seems heavy, but is actually extremely light because it is hollow inside. The average size of these birds is 64 centimeters, which must be added about 20 cm for the length of the spout.
They mainly eat fruits, insects, termites, spiders, reptiles, bird eggs and even young. Berries and seeds seized the tip of the spout and “manipulated” using language that is a length of 15 cm. They swallow reversing tooth back. It prefers to stay in the tops of tall trees. It can also form small bands, especially between couples, groom each other plumage and exchange of food.
They nest in hollow trees. Their reproductive cycle is annual. Eggs are usually two in number, sometimes four, incubated alternately by the torque. At hatching, the chicks are blind and hairless. The plumage appears at the end of a month. They leave the nest before the 50th day.
