Javan Rusa – Rusa timorensis
This deer, also called Sunda samba or Java deer, is a species of the genus Cervus living on the island of Java.
It eats leaves and bark of trees, threatening a number of endemic species. Therefore, it is considered an invasive species in the country.
Its population in New Caledonia is probably between 200.000 and 300.000 individuals and seems to continue to grow because of a lack of predators except man. It is an important food source.It is now confined to some nature reserves to prevent its proliferation.
It is on the red list of endangered species. It is currently present only on the mainland.
