Asian elephant – Elephas maximus

The Asian elephant is also known as the Asiatic elephant.

It is the only living species of the genus Elephas.

This species is native from Southeast Asia where the 3 subspecies are known by their distribution‘s area:

• Distributed in Sri Lanka – elepha maximus maximus
• Distributed in the mainland Asia – Elephas maximus indicus (Also Known As the Indian elephant)
• Distributed in Sumatra Elephas maximus sumatranus
