Lord Derby’s parakeet – Psittacula Derbiana
The Lord Derby’s parakeet is also known as Derbyan parakeet.
This parrot species lives in Tibet, Sichuan and Yunnan.
The adult male and female are easily distinguished because they have different beak colours and slightly different plumage. Its head has gray shades of blue with a black front, the color of the black plumage extending from the mandible to the eye in the form of a line. It also has black color on the throat level, while the wings and neck are green, which serves as a camouflage in nature. The wings are covered with a yellow veil. For the female the beak is completely black.
They are very resistant to cold, however they will be sensitive to frost legs and fingers.
Sexual maturity is reached at the age of 4, the female often lays 3 eggs which she incubates for 24 to 26 days, the youngs leave the nest at the age of 52 days.
Its food consists of a seed mixture, buckwheat, nuts, fruits, vegetables, sprouted seeds, berries and bread
Its lifetime is estimated at around 30 years.
The species suffers from poaching for the illegal wildlife trade and fetches a high price in the black market.
