The Alligator snapping turtle is the largest freshwater aquatic turtle in North America. This species has a dark shell, brown-black, often covered with algae. It is not able to return its entire head and has a powerful beak. This is the only turtle to have a lure. This reddish worm appendix is used to attract prey. Appendix’s movements act as a worm, attracting prey more easily. The sudden and powerful slam of the mouth guarantees the final set.
Males can reach 100 kg, with a tail length of 75 cm. The female lays 10 to 50 eggs with spherical hatching occurs after 60 to 100 days. The incubation period is highly variable and can take up to 100 days. It is also dependent on atmospheric conditions.
