Great hammerhead shark – Sphyrna mokarran
The great hammerhead shark is a fish that lives in tropical oceans and some seas. It inherits the characteristics especially hammerheads by the broad flattened extensions of its head that give these fish a large lift and allow them to make tighter turns than other sharks, it is recognizable by its highly developed dorsal and can reach a height of 5.5 meters.
It is found in all tropical oceans in the Red Sea and the Mediterranean. It evolves from the surface to 100 meters deep, usually solitary. Its activity is mainly nocturnal.
Their gestation is viviparous and ranges from 9 to 12 months. The female can have in her stomach 10 to 40 shark embryos. They measure about 60 cm at birth. Reproduction is mysterious because it is very difficult to be able to observe.
It feeds on bony fish but also stripes, sharks, crustaceans and leopard stripe, one of its favorite prey.
This species is immune against the venom of the lines, it is also one of the most sensitive to electricity sharks.
The great hammerhead shark can live for about 37 years.
This shark species is in danger of extinction.
